Samuel Dalembert presents November Hometown Hero Award
This afternoon, Samuel Dalembert of the Philadelphia 76ers surprised Chris Fleming, a mother of three, by naming her the season’s first recipient of Hometown Hero award. The award, given monthly during the regular season, recognizes individuals who go out of their way to give back to the community.
Chris will be formally presented the award during Autism Awareness Night on Nov. 21 when the Sixers host the Los Angeles Clippers.
Chris’ son, Nick, was diagnosed with Autism at the age of three. Since that time, Chris has worked with Variety – The Children’s Charity for support and education about autism to organize fundraisers and lend support in any way that she can.
"I’ve had two fundraisers already and am currently planning a Beef and Beer in March to raise money for Variety," Chris explained after the ceremony, which also included Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Mr. Incredible in town for their Disney on Ice performance. "I do a lot when my son goes up for the weekend to their retreats. I don’t like to just drop him off; I like hanging out with him and watching all the kids enjoy themselves. Every chance I get when they need volunteers I try to go."
Sixers Center Samuel Dalembert was grateful to be part of the surprise for such an outstanding mom.
"It’s a great feeling to come support people who are giving their time to organizations such as Variety," said Dalembert. "The least I could do is to be here and congratulate Chris for all her work and honor her as our Hometown Hero."
Chris was flattered by the presentation which included tickets to the game as well as tickets for a group from Variety to attend Disney on Ice: A Disney Land Adventure.
"This is overwhelming," said Chris. "I don’t feel like I’m a hero, but then to have everyone here makes me feel very special."
