Sixers "Stuff the Bus"
The 76ers took time out to meet the fans of Philadelphia on Thursday, as newly acquired forward Elton Brand and center Samuel Dalembert showed up to participate in the Sixers “Stuff the Bus” event at the Acme Market on City Avenue in Bala Cynwyd.
The 76ers organization encouraged people to give back to the community by donating school supplies, which benefited the Philadelphia School Districts.
“It is important that these kids go to school with a new note book, a new binder and new pens,” said Brand. “There was a time where my mom had to struggle to send me to school with new folders and backpacks so if you have it, donate it, and it will definitely go to kids who deserve it.”
Brand, a two-time All-Star, signed with the Sixers on July 9, 2008, coming to the Sixers after spending the last seven seasons in Los Angeles with the Clippers.
“It means a lot to me to help these young kids reach their dreams,” said Brand. “I enjoy giving back to the community and seeing the smile on kids’ faces. It’s lot of fun, and very important for the kids to get great school supplies.”
Brand and Dalembert both signed autographs for individuals who participated with the donation. The fans also received “Run With Us” T-Shirts and had the opportunity to get their pictures with the players.
“It is very important to give back, this was great idea and hopefully a lot of people participate,” said Dalembert. “You can only use so much for yourself so you try to give back. It makes you feel good as well as helps the kids. I look to change one life at a time. Everyone is entitled to education because the mind is a terrible thing to waste.”
There was a great turnout for the event, which saw a over 1,300 items collected, including binders, folders, notebooks, paper, pens, pencils, highlighters, crayons, markers schoolbags and many other helpful supplies for students to start the new school year.
“The Sixers have been a staple in the community for years and we’re definitely going to continue that tradition,” Brand said.
